Don't Eat the Grapes

Betty Crocker Quick Cook Cookbook, 1954

Macaroni Saute

The cookbook says that what makes this dish special is saute the macaroni before you mix it all together.

2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
1/2 cup chopped onions
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 cup corn oil
3 cups tomato juice
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Saute macaroni, onion, green pepper and garlic in hot oil till macaroni turns slightly yellow. Add tomato juice and seasonings; bring to boiling. Cover and simmer 20 min. 6 servings.

Oats make it Better

A Picture Treasury of Good Cooking by Demetria Taylor and Lillian Ziegfeld, Tested recipe Institute Inc., 1953.

Fruit Bars (Date Bars)

3/4 Cup sifted flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup brown sugar firmly packed
1/4 cup melted shortening (or butter)
2 eggs, well beaten
1 cup nuts
1 cup pitted dates

Set oven to 350. Grease a 9" square pan.
Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt; add sugar; mix well. Combine shortening and eggs; stir into dry ingredients and blend well. Stir in nuts and dates. Turn into greased pan and bake 30 mins. or until brown. Cut into bars while hot. Makes 16 bars.

I've also had date bars the have and oatmeal topping and which this appears to have. The topping recipe is:

1/2 cup brown sugar firmly packed
3/4 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup sifted flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup shortening or butter

Cut together and sprinke on top.

The pottery seen in this picture is Cornish Pottery or Kitcheware. It often had a word printed on it indicating what it was intended to hold, like this one. Blue stripes are the most common and the red, green, and others colors are rarer.

Apparently these travel well as the picture indicates some of them are going to be mailed.

Lunchtime Memories

Betty Crocker Quick Cook Cookbook, 1954

Lunch Time

Peanut butter and Jelly
Ham and cheese (American) with mayo
Egg Salad
Ham Salad (a favorite of mine)
Pickles and carrot sticks
oranges
apples
A piece of cherry pie in a pie shaped container

The plaid thermos with a cork in it is the best!

I had the Campus Queen before I got older and only a brown paper bag would do - the Campus Queen smelled perpetually of oranges and peanut butter - it leeched into the essence of the box.

Rise and Shine

Betty Crocker Cookbook, 1954

Cereal

Looks like we have some Corn Flakes, some Cheerios, some Kix, and some cream of wheat with a baked apple in it? Look at that fancy half a grapefruit - on crushed ice, no less.

Plus all of the different types of fruit - a breakfast cereal feast!
