Parallax
Tried out Parallax in Tremont on Saturday with M_ (the spouse) and M_2 (the colleague). The website is the same as all the Cleveland area trendy restaurant websites, with too much flash stuff going on. Despite all their carefully designed looks, they all have a kind of sameness. Despite this, the food at the place is worth the visit. We mostly sampled sushi from their clipboard menus - all these places just have to have a unique menu, don’t they? Like a kid at school dyeing their hair aqua to be different, then hanging out with the other hair-dye crowd near the school doors, smoking and attempting to look like album covers.
I don’t understand interior design so I can’t say much about the interior, but it’s unobtrusive and modern. The salad was nice - M_ was fond of the roasted tomatoes. The flavour of the sushi came alive and slapped us around a bit, pleased though we were to be on the receiving end of the carefully prepared plates. The Rainbow rolls and tuna and yellowfin rolls were delish, and the many pieces of tempura I stole off of M_’s plate were well worth the theft. M_2 pronouced it some of the best sushi she’s had, including many places in New York. M_ and I both agreed. The Banana Napoleon was my fave on the dessert menu, and bucking the trendy dining place trend, the deserts and the sushi too were not the typical tiny amount of delicate food, but quite huge portions. So no need to order too much. It ran around $44 a person, including salads, entrés with extra sushi pieces and two desserts. We did not partake, but there is a long wine list to choose from. They also have a large number of non-sushi items which we may try another time.
The place was jumping Saturday, and the bar looked busy as well - so reservations, have them. We discussed life, the State of Ohio, and how for some reason everyone is living in Arizona these days. I also confused an arboreal instructor with a prison guard, but given the similarities in both fields I cannot be the only one.
